Growing up, my favorite thing of all time was to have slumber parties with my best friends. Then I grew up. And it turns out slumber parties with my best friends are still my favorite thing of all time. They consist of good (read: terrible) food, great chatter, and an insane amount of laughter.

When I got into residency, I hoped and prayed for a good group of co-workers. But only a few days into my new “job,” it was obvious that I had just become part of the coolest new family. And to tell you the truth, I pretty much can’t get enough of them. So what better way to have a great time and celebrate friendship than with a huge, obnoxious, all-girls (sorry, boys) slumber party at mi casa? Fortunately, I was not the only fan of the idea…

Wolfgang had a good time too, making sure every single person paid attention to him between sips of their margaritas (THANKS FOR MAKING THEM FOR US, JEFFREY!).

After about 3 hours of scarfing down chips and queso, delighting in fine cheeses with crackers, and stuffing our faces with veggie dip, chocolates, cupcakes, and caramels, we made smores. You know, for dessert.

Wolfgang helped start the fire, obviously.

People slowly trickled away over the next hours due to important stuff like work, dental appointments, and severe cat-allergy attacks bordering on impending anaphylaxis. And others stayed through breakfast, lunch, and dinner the next day. The true mark of a fellow slumber-party fanatic like me! Thanks, K!

We feasted on sushi, took a walk along the the quiet, snowy sidewalks, and had a therapeutic arts-and-crafts session.

The cherry-on-top was ending with a surprise brownie-sundae birthday party for one of the boys.

Now if only Jeffrey would get home from his fun weekend of skiing with the guys, my weekend will be complete.

Today marks the 2nd anniversary of this blog… WHEEEE!!!  Over the past 24 months, DotS has turned into so much more than I had initially—and wishfully—envisioned.  It has more than served its original intention to help relieve the stresses of a busy medical career by reminding me of the things, besides medicine, that make me ME.  It has kept me connected to family, pushed me to keep my hobbies alive, and allowed me to stumble upon a wonderful community of other bloggers, artists, photographers, story-tellers…

So THANK YOU.  Thank you for reading, for subscribing, for liking, and for commenting.  Thank you for entering my cyber life and for allowing me to enter yours.  Thank you for validating all the hard work I put into making sure I’m having a good time :)

I will leave you with this perfectly lovely thought, which I ran across yesterday thanks to a dear friend*:

“A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes.” -Hugh Downs

It is my mantra for life, and my hope is that Doctor on the Side will help inspire you to make it yours.

MUAH!

For a person used to constant >100 degree weather, there is something magically surreal about the idea of a White Christmas.  Couple that to a childhood in the interminable flatlands of northern Mexico/southern Texas, mesquite trees, and ranches full of cacti, and the thought of a Winter Wonderland naturally becomes an impossibility achievable only through the magic of Hollywood.

And then the mom-and-dad-in-law decided to buy a house in Colorado, and my fabled White Winter Wonderland Christmas magically became real.

We spent our 4 days there relaxing by the wood-burning stove, reading novels on the window seat overlooking the snowy Rockies, and going through Jeffrey’s mom’s long list of “Minute to Win It” games…

IMG_8102

We also made an extensive assortment of astronomically calorie-rich treats, including cupcakes, cake pops, pecan pie, puppy chow, sugar cookies, almond bark pretzels, etc., etc.

And did you know that snow-shoeing the silent, peaceful, uninhabited Rocky Mountains is pretty much the coolest thing you could ever do in your life?  It’s just you, the snow-covered baby pine trees, a squirrel or two trying to keep warm, the sound of the wind, and the majestic mountainside.  (And your brother-in-law whacking you with snowballs.)

We also all had matching PJ’s.  Yes.

And because we don’t have kids, we get to be the kids.  And go on a sleigh ride!  OMG!

IMG_8333

The beauty of the whole thing was no joke.  And no, of course I didn’t make the sleigh stop in the middle of nowhere so I could jump out, mount the camera on the tripod, and set up The Perfect Shot.  No!  That would be ridiculous and irrational and embarrassing to all involved………

Also, I coulda’ chosen a smaller hat.

So it turns out White Christmases in Winter Wonderlands exist!  Nice move, in-laws.  Nice move, indeed.

I hope your holidays were marvelous and that you were able to spend them with your loved ones.  Happy New Year to all, and thank you for continuing to read my ramblings and enjoy my photos!  You’ve made this blog one of my favorite things in the world!!!!!!!!

As I spend this holiday away from mine and Jeffrey’s family—working back-to-back overnight shifts in the pediatric emergency room instead of stuffing my face with Nani’s pure de papas—I find that the best way to feel close to family is through photographs.  So I will take this opportunity to be thankful for priceless family moments by sharing my favorite pictures from my favorite thing that happened this year: that time when 14 of my aunts, uncles, and cousins (you know, about 1/5 of my family on my mom’s side) came to visit us in Boston!

I am thankful for…

little cousins!

help in the kitchen

picnics in the back yard

dance parties in the sunroom (they turned my star in to a disco-ball…)

sailing off to find whales

taking over public spaces. sorry, everybody else, the stairs are OURS.

silly soda breaks

and giant cupcakes

ice cream for dinner (energy fuel)

private tours because our group was bigger than anyone else’s

infinite photo-ops

PILGRIMS!

filling the entire center table at Mr. Bartley’s

serious conversations (in English, of course. my little cousins are very mindful.)

more ice cream

And last but not least, I am thankful for…

a family that travels in packs

¡GRACIAS!

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!  And stay away from the emergency room!

List of things that are not emergencies:

  1. the sore throat you had last week
  2. the rash that sometimes itches that you noticed 3 weeks ago
  3. that cough that hasn’t cleared
  4. sleepiness after eating too much turkey

List of things that are emergencies:

  1. new-onset seizure
  2. your arm fell off
  3. baby turned blue
  4. asthma attack
  5. chest pain
  6. dehydration
  7. car crash
  8. full-body hives, swollen lips, and wheezing
  9. sudden testicular pain
  10. rectal temperature > 100.4 in a less-than-2-month-old

IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!!! That’s right, today I turned 28. And when I turn a new age, Jeffrey and I celebrate with only the best dessert in the universe: Death by Chocolate.

Best. Dessert. In the universe. Period. (And super easy!)

Want to know how to make it? You need:

  1. Fudge brownie mix
  2. Eight servings of instant chocolate pudding (2 little boxes)
  3. Two bags of mini Heath bars
  4. Large tub of Cool Whip

Make the brownies and pudding as instructed in their respective boxes. I try to slightly underbake the brownies so they’ll be soft and gooey, but that’s personal preference! I also never get the brownie mix that has chocolate chips in it, because eventually you put this dessert in the fridge and the chips gets cold and hard, which I don’t like.

Next, take all the heath bars out and crush them with a hammer. Yes. A hammer.

Following? Great. Continue making a huge mess by mashing up the brownies. When that’s done, layer everything in a big bowl. My order of preference: brownies, pudding, heath bars, cool whip. Rinse and repeat for a total of 2 layers of everything. Garnish the top with a bit of shaved chocolate, and chill in the fridge for a couple of hours before serving!

Because the year is ending, and TOMORROW I MEET THE NEW PEDIATRIC INTERN CLASS of my training program (as in, in a few days I will no longer be The Intern… heehee!), I decided to share the treat with them at their welcome potluck dinner.

Why is my face covered? Because it’s my 10 PM, I’ve-already-taken-off-my-makeup-and-workclothes-and-gotten-into-pj’s face.

And because we couldn’t possibly let our creation tempt us from the fridge all night, we left just enough to make ourselves two miniature Death by Chocolates to enjoy after dinner. (Jeffrey spoiled me with crab-stuffed flounder… from Trader Joe’s… pasta, salad, and of course, Moscato d’Asti.)

I can hear the residents getting excited about this thing already…

Goodnight, and happy birthday to me! (Lot’s of new posts coming soon, I promise!)
